My cousin's wife Harini and I have been bragging about Train system in the US of A. Come to think of it, there's never been local trains in B'lore(well the KSRTC itself s'kd), only when we get to chennai - a couple of times we used to take the local train. After coming to VA - have I realized the value of time in commuting...man sometimes its a big waste. Most people in the northeast BIG cities (including the special me) use the train system. In the Wash DC area it is called Metro, Chicago - the CTA or EL and NJ- NJ Transit or A's B's C's etc..

I dont want to sound too biased, but seems like the Metro is the cleanest one of all the three! Possibly the most expensive too. However it is not extensively connected in and around DC - which is supposedly the worlds most important city - come on folks..can you believe we have only two-lane-clogged-all-the-time roads getting into DC?? Well thats that...

Metro has a policy that you cant eat or drink in the train. And WHEN you see that sign each time, your stomach growls, throat goes dry and you feel like a drop of water or a chocolate is the ultimate thing you want! Bad Bad mind huh.But the funny thing is how people (atleast 95%) of them follow this - Till date (3 yrs of Metro travel) I have seen maybe 1 or 2 of them eating some food. It is this discipline that is driving success into these systems. I see some people pick up papers left by others and trash it when they get out of the station, a simple gesture of helping them keeping clean.

I see - I observe - I wish to learn - I (try to) share!... Hope that picks some parts of some brains!

2005 - hows it going to be?

Wishing all my readers a very happy new year! I realised the the new year has something to give to each of us, memories - good and bad to be carried along our path of life. Events which bring us a smile and disasters that touch our hearts. Starting out with a prayer to those who suffered and died in Tsunami, Iraq and all aound the world, may their souls rest in peace. This is such a difficult thing to say - how can they rest in peace when they had an unfortunate death. How will we ever justify the loss of a life.

I dont want to sound too pessimistic right from the beginning of this year.

Alright then - lets start with some weird "Wacky Warning Labels" (found this off )

* A toilet brush with a tag that says "Do not use for personal hygiene"
* A scooter with the warning "This product moves when used."
* A digital thermometer with the advice "Once used rectally, the thermometer should not be used orally."
* An electric blender used for chopping and dicing that reminds users to " "Never remove food or other items from the blades while the product is operating."
* And a three-inch bag of air used for packaging that read "Do not use this product as a toy, pillow, or flotation device."

:) Hv fun y'all!

tsunami - who sent you?

Across the sand,
a clear blue morning,
calm winds bringing freshness,
a tinge of saltiness in the air,
birds chirping flying across,
people taking early walks,
waves touching the feet,
sand beneath pulled away,
trees waving their leaves,
sun getting brighter ready to start the day...

Nature looks its Best,

Then...
Apocalypse strikes...
And the sea roars...
devouring lives like a hungry animal
mercilessly tearing apart lives
filled with anger, vengence and violence!
Why?...but why this anger,
why all the vengence,
why take lives of innocent children,
the homeless, the old couples taking morning walks,
hundreds of fisherman on their daily routines,
the thatched roofs on the banks...
wash bodies ashore,
Who has answer to these questions?
Can we blame nature?
Mother Earth?
The heavens, hells or the dead's stars?

God?

Lets help them get over this disaster and do what we can....Pray!

Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi - a legend

" We were poor, but rich in music. I was brought up with music all around me. Singing came more naturally to me than talking. I was a timid child. Mother's strict discipline made me even more silent. Mother wouldn't let me or my sister Vadivambal step out of the house unnecessarily. In fact she didn't like it if we stood too long near the front door, or looked out of the window. " These were some of MS's words ...it touches our heart and brings a tear drop down to think that she is no more. The magic of her voice , the resounding songs, mantras and evergreen music will remain in our hearts and ears for times to come. We are fortunate to have had their presence in our lives. Some people bless us with their, MS blessed each one with her graceful voice.

Most south-indian homes are woken by her voice with the "Suprabhatam" and the evenings are lit with "Vishnusaharanamam".

I hope and pray for her soul, one of the best women India ever had. Thanks to technology that we are able to preserve their talent for centuries to come.

I came across this link some months back and had it bookmarked..Please read it when you have time. Dedicated to MS

How to Sell Using Your Body

I know the title sounds odd - but what I was trying to write about is "Mannerism" and found some facts in a business site. I looked it up in dictionary just again - out of curiosity (!) and this is what it said : (1) [n] a deliberate pretense or exaggerated display (2) [n] a behavioral attribute that is distinctive and peculiar to an individual ..

Came across some interesting facts as well:

1) Psychologists claim that the impact you make on others depends on what you say (7%), how you say it (38%), and by your body language (55%).
2) The moment you meet a person, you judge them by what you see and feel. The process takes less than 10 seconds but the impression is permanent.
3) The human body can produce over 700,000 unique movements. These movements have been partitioned into about 60 discrete and symbolic signals and around 60 gestures
4) Now comes the fun part- Non-verbal signals:
Crossed arms can indicate defensiveness, or simply a comfortable position
Touching the nose can suggest doubt in what the person is hearing(Or it could be a response to an itch or soreness from a recent cold)
an unbuttoned jacket can signify openness and cooperation ( It could also be an overweight person trying to fit into an old jacket)
The way you shake hands provides clues to your personality. Aggressive people have firm handshakes. People with low self esteem often have a limp handshake
The clever woman moves her index and little finger in toward her palm preventing a crushing handshake
Posture- A slouch can suggest lack of interest or enthusiasm. Standing straight with your weight balanced on each foot makes you look confident and relaxed

Well some of it is there ..do you feel at ease after reading this...Iam going to be conscious abt my moves for the next ..hmm...15mins probably!!

Been there Done that!

This was a funny incident and it happens to everyone i suppose! I was on this train last evening getting back home and I shud say - I have this habit (shud try & get rid of) seeing what books others are reading..now thats not so bad is it? Iam just inquisitive to know the title - not that I'd buy it the next thing that day - but call me a "curious cat" ..whatever! So this guy sitting in front of me - nerdy glasses, jutting pouting lips, raised eyebrows and weird facial expressions. My eyes caught the book he was reading ! aah couldnt see the title, the guy next to his was blocking it with his bag..Ugh..ok I decided to wait a few seconds and watch him ( i was being rude i know), he was displaying expressions like no man's business...we time passed and i did glance at this book - Guess what "Cracking the GRE - The Princeton Review"..Ahaaa..the light bulb glowed in my head and Iam like thinking "Been there done that buddy!!!" ..I had this big sigh of relief and the feeling of satisfaction that I gave GRE and am done with it!! hee hee...Now that might not make much of sense, but it made me feel good abt myself!

Inner Walls

It was a good experience I had when I went to Chicago. I was kinda hinting to my co-worker Cheryl if she was interested to hang out one evening, I was bored, didnt want to watch TV in my room again. She was a nice person from what I had heard. She immediately said that she had a class to attend .. I was like "oh ok...not a problem!".And minutes later I get this email from her - "Priya - if you are interested you can come with me as a guest to my seminar tonite. I think I mentioned that the subject matter of my class is ontology, which is the science of being. Who you are being in every moment affects everything and everyone around you, it greatly impacts your relationships with everyone you come into contact with, and consequently affects everything that happens to you.". I kinda felt nice that I was being invited....SO immly I said WOKAY :-d. About 5, we left work walked to her beautiful apt in Downtown near the Navy Pier - such a fab view of the city & river, spent a little time there, drove to her class. She was driving a stick-shift - reminded me of my good ol' driving days in B'lore. We parked at an open place and went to a kabab place and I got my usual veggie stuffs. Inroduced her to our samosas :). We finished up and walked over to the class. There were like 50 ppl there. All ages & backgrounds. The first thot that came to me was - What am I going to do here - will they ask me to join them!! And Cheryl was quiet throughout! I signed in and went and sat with her on the last row !! Things took time to calm off and then came this guy who was a senior person in their institute, he started talking and shouting (he literally was loud!)...and it went on for 3 hrs. But I must say I did learn a few things thou I hesitated to register into a class...The entire topic was about "you as a individual trying to have a breakthrough" - in what?? the answer was "In anything" - from being able to communicate with spouses/children to being confident in life and achieving success. I know this sounds like one of our Moral Philosophy classes...but thats what is essential in life. The key point out of the session were:

1) Remove those barriers that we create around ourselves.
2) Stop thinking what others may think about you - dont waste your life trying to be what you are not
3) Open up and give a chance to trust or be trusted.

The final thought was illustrated with a classic example, the guy suddenly said "once when i was 6 - my friend told me I was a loser" - I picked up that with me (and saying that he lifted a chair) , "then at 12 , my sister said that i have an attitude problem" - I picked up that (along with the chair, he carried the mic stand) ..and so on, with everything every person said bad about him, he carried another extra item ...and finally at 30 - with all the burden , he went up to a girl sittin on the first row with the chair he was carrying blocking the two of em - he says "can we start a relationship together" - The whole crowd was laughing - and the point was MADE !! MOST IMPORTANT & DIFFICULT - Leave behind all the old thoughts/grudges/criticisms that people have showered on you. You are in the process burdening yourself - how can you lead a life with such a situation?

Thats that...its your turn to think.

Its Diwali!

We indians are so pampered with all these festivals - its like you cant live with or without them!! Every other week we have something or the other to celebrate - rather a reason to eat sumptously!! Not that I crib eating , but its probably the only reason that many of us NRIs are skinny that we dont get to eat all those sweets and namkeens like we used to back in india.

Diwali is so much fun in younger years...I sound like an old woman now - no that can never happen ;) ..we kids on the block would have a competetion as to who'd be the first to wake up - like 2am and 3am and go fire cracker on everyones' compound wall to wake them up...its so much fun that day.
All moms would not disclose their sweets/karams till that day to not let out recipes or whatever damn reason that may be..who cared, we were busy collecting fire crackers! Starting off with nalangu, a nice oil bath and the new dresses would be ready to wear..its such a nice feeling those days, cos you'd get to wear a new dress maybe 3-4 times a year....unlike times now. These would usually be the best of dresses yu'd ever get, so there'd be matching earrings, bangles and what not!! I've literally fleeced my dad some years i think, poor guy wud always just wear some shirt given to him on some occasion ..and occasionally - a new veshti! you cannot argue with men of those times on such matters. Moms are always the opposite - atleast mine is !! She would be ready with all the displayable artifacts for this year! She is a fun loving woman - so comes under our category of ppl!

so all done, we venture out, to visit and display ourselves on our lane, talking abt wheres and whats of the purchases..what a mundane way to start the day!! then we'd come back home, eat something (that was understood right!!) burst some crackers - at dawn start out on expeditions!
yeah it wud be from house to house - eating/"tasting" as i wud recall - all aunties sweets & karams..this was fun, cos its a test for your stomach an early winter morning! most of them were good - i'd rather say this in case some of those folks read this blog later some day!!

Anyways - these thoughts came by as i visited several of our indian websites to see that everyone is in a Diwali mood - selling , sending, buying gifts. And we - here are as usual getting to our daily routines - without much of a diff- Does this make you think that we are losing out on our culture??

I have a couple of things to blog about today...

Firstly about the US Elections..yeah you all saw it didnt you..CNN.com with Bush & his brightest smiles.Hmm..Iam no politics enthusiast but yet, I somehow felt that Kerry shud be given a chance. It seemed like a not so fair game ... I had no clue about how such stuff worked in this country (not tht i did in india either!). But somehow after watching those bits of presidential debates, it occured to me - as a novice to politics, that the way these leaders present themselves matters so much. Bush was all along repeating the same thing over and over in different words - now like the way I do in my writings !! All I could think was "Mister - Dont beat around the Bush" - lame joke huh..but yeah, it seemed like inspite of leading this country through rough times in the last 4 years, he didnt seem to deliver that punch and personality that would impress many. I was totally surprised when the results initially came out - all the mid-west states were looted away by Bush..Watching CNN project the US map on an icestaking rink was awesome...they had done a great job projecting by the hour of poll closing. All said and done, I dont know if I shud be happy (the gains we immigrants have ) with Bush being elected or not. I shall think abt it for the next four years, hopefully by then , I may be more knowlegdeable abt US politics, eligible to vote ;) or mabbe not (!).

Secondly, I had read this Karan Thapar et JJ matter sometime back, it was fun. She is sooooo aggressive. That woman is has some tough muscles! Thot i'd share it for anyone to read.....its fun to read it. Click this link...KT & JJ

Spooky nite for kids!

It was so much fun yesterday, kids clad in cute outfits knocking on each door & shouting "Trick or Treeeat!" ...We even ran out of candies and had to buy more! They were just swarming @ our door - guess the news passed around quickly that we gave candies generously (hee hee..not that i did!). some of them just came in PJs...wonder what they were ! We took a walk around our neighbourhood to see some spooky costumes and decors. One of the neighbours had a projector outside the house playing "Harry Potter" for kids to watch...
.
That got me to thinking whats this halloween thingy all about..is it really spooky or some celebration like how we do during our harvest seasons or was it like our Navarathri Golu where kids & parents go from house to house...(that last one was my MIL's ideology - just stole it!)

Here we go ...
Halloween is said to have dated 2000 yrs ago, when a group called "CELTS" who lived in what is now - Ireland, France region celebrated their new year on November 1.This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. . For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands and the pope decided to designate Nov 1st as All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas and the night before it began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

Catching up...

its been really long since i have written, i always felt like having a blog that speaks my mind, and after following Sudhar.com closely for over a year now, I feel that you have to be gifted to write. Its true...And me - being a writers daughter , hee hee, I shud be ashamed to say I dont have time to write...well yeah..its not that I dont want to...the things i want to put into writing race thru my mind at all odd hours/places. The other day I was in the bus and you cant believe how much time you get when u travel all alone....its amazing. Just that - its all the more amazing how much time gets wasted not doing anything!!

I watch all the people - its fun..hey come on - I dont stare :) I just observe their mannerisms etc. I will keep that as a separate blog and bug everyone ;)

Now coming to the point....I was going thru Sudhars' links and from there , I just branched to this guy Srikanth's blog and then to Arun and then to lazyGeek and then to Ramya ....man the chain went on..i think its called "BLOGROLL"...where u share or provide links probably of other blogs... man you must see this guy Lazy geeks site - he has over 30 ppl on his list....just imagine someone reading all those blogs once a day :-d
and now yu'dve guessed how s/w enggs spend their valuable time @ work ...haa haa

but i must say, most of those bloggers sounded like they had a journalism background..its such an awesome profession...(we'll talk abt it sometime - that and ofcourse the profession of a doctor..wow)...

alrighty then...time for a tea break
